Although it is usually a highlight of Lakers-Grizzlies meetings, the Gasol Brothers will not face off tonight when Pau's Lakers host Marc's Grizzlies. Pau will miss tonight's game as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, although by all accounts it seems to be completely healed. As with Allen Iverson's situation, though, with a hamstring you can never be too careful. Last season, Pau held a slight edge over his younger brother, averaging 16 ppg in the teams' four matchups, all Laker wins, while Marc averaged 13 ppg. However, Marc outscored Pau in each of the last two meetings, 17-13 and 14-12, respectively.

The Grizzlies didn't use their bench much at all outside of Iverson's 17 minutes. By overtime, the starters had to be exhausted. Gasol played 49 minutes, while Mayo and Gay each played over 46 minutes. They are going to need some rest at some point, which means the Grizzlies need to find someone on the bench (that means you, AI) to provide some offense.

The night began with a chilly reception for former Grizzly Marc Gasol, who heard boos as he was introduced, although a video highlight tribute during the game’s first timeout evoked a standing ovation. His return to Memphis also brought out local Laker fans, who wore Pau jerseys and cheered against the hometown Grizzlies.

Tonight's game between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Lakers marks a homecoming for Lakers forward Pau Gasol, who makes his first return to Memphis since being traded away last February. It will also be a family reunion of sorts for Pau and his brother, Grizzlies forward Marc, who played together on the Spanish Olympic team in Beijing. The two Gasols have strikingly different playing styles due to different physical characteristics. While Pau is taller and quicker than Marc, his brother brings more power and strength to the game. Marc has provided the physical post presence the Grizzlies haven't had since Bryant Reeves retired. While his offensive production has been lacking, Marc makes up for it with his defense and intelligent play.

Marc Gasol was a non-factor, scoring nine points on 3-of-10 shooting. O.J. Mayo saw his career-launching 25-game streak of scoring in double figures end as he managed only seven points on 2-of-10 shooting. Rudy Gay hit 7-of-10 shots to lead the team with 17 points, while Milicic was the only other Grizzly to reach double figures.

With Gay struggling, it is critical that Marc Gasol and others step up offensively in support of O.J. Mayo. The team has to get off to a good start and continue to shoot above 50 percent. Most importantly, the defense has to improve. If the Grizzlies had played better defense over the past few games, they might be working on a win streak. As well as they have been shooting as a group, the defense is all that is missing.

Even so, Duncan will be a handful for Marc Gasol and whoever ends up helping him out on the defensive end. Gasol needs to continue his solid defensive performance and must challenge Duncan on the boards, perhaps even matching his rebound total. The Spurs have a physical front line alongside Duncan, with Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto providing mostly defensive support. The Grizzlies will have to be smart enough to stay out of foul trouble while somehow limiting the damage those guys can do.

Marc Gasol had an excellent passing game, picking up four assists as he fed teammates slashing through the lane for easy layups. The Grizzlies pushed the tempo in the fourth quarter to get fast-break layups by Quinton Ross and Gay.

Marc Gasol needs to forget about the difficulty he had scoring against the Kings and focus on doing what made him successful in Monday's win when he put up career-high numbers. Based on that performance he knows that he can have his way with Brandan Wright, Ronny Turiaf and the other Warrior forwards when they are forced to cover him. Even Andris Biedrins isn't quite strong enough to slow Gasol much. If he is aggressive on both ends of the floor it will go a long way toward helping the Grizzlies end their road woes.
